Subject: A Good Try
Subject: A Good Try
Micheaux deserves credit for trying - like Ed Wood, his sincerity is obvious. So is his unique viewpoint and film technique. The actors might have done a better job delivering their lines if the dialog resembled common human speech patterns, or they might not. When compared to a more competent race film like Gang War, also available here, any Micheaux film looks primitive and eccentric, but there are important features which shouldn't be overlooked. This film doesn't take place in the all-black dream world of Gang War or TV's Amos and Andy, and one character notably denounces his white employer for exploiting black employees. It's not an easy movie to sit through because of its primitive and eccentric qualities, but it shows the character of its creator and deals with circumstances not often addressed in mainstream films of the day.

A low budget C movie of even an lower theatrical standard.
The plot line and acting are poor as well as the editing technique involved.
The one and only positives in this film and the only reason it received a 2 star rating is the musical numbers and the few dance routine scenes.
I believe that these scenes portrayed the music and culture of the era accurately and were fairly entertaining.
On another note I also believe that the segregational aspect of society was portrayed as well as one could expect.
I wouldn't be suprised whatsoever that this film
was only viewed by black audiences upon release and then only for a short period of time due to it's dull storyline and poor acting.

This movie is so funny I can't help but imagine the makers must of had some idea of what they were doing.
It seems inintentional but it's way over the top funny.

One of the best funny/bad movies I have seen in a long time, ÃÂLying LipsÃÂ is a simple yarn (with a pretty stupid ending that takes 5 minutes to explain) about a woman who is framed with her AuntÃÂs murder. Lying Lips also presents us with the attempted acting skills of one Edna Mae Harris. Her singing is not bad, but when sheÃÂs forced to act, her line delivery is so hilariously bad I was falling off the floor laughing. Even worse is the dialogue. For some odd reason, the director made the cops as stupid as possible. Check the interrogation scene. EVERYTHING is repeated twice, and sometimes three times! ÃÂI answered the phoneÃÂ ÃÂYou answered the phone?ÃÂ ÃÂI Answered The PhoneÃÂ ÃÂI went back to the phone!ÃÂ ÃÂSo you went back to the phone?ÃÂ ÃÂI went back to the phone!ÃÂ Also the police are very smart:
Witness: ÃÂShe was my cousin!ÃÂ
Police Chief: ÃÂOh she was your cousin! So you were related!ÃÂ
Also, people have made comments about Earl JonesÃÂ performance. I thought he was so stlilted, just barking out his lines to the point of hilarity!
Much much more to be found in this film: Edna Mae taking a bath apparently with her heels on, her poor attempts at screaming and fainting, her reaction when someone answers the phone, (see the title of my review for an explanation of this), her schitzophrenic bath habits, the laughable continuity, the laughable editing, clubs that have wooden doors and no signage, and a white police chief who say heÃÂs glad a black policeman is helping to solve who killed a black woman because ÃÂbeing a colored man, he might find things our other officers could not!ÃÂ A Hoot!
